Poetry Friday: An Old Friend Came to Visit

Be sure to visit this weeks roundup.

An Old Friend Came to Visit

Listlessness, my old friend

let us walk down the well-worn road where I remain flustered

and balk at even the minutest of tasks.

With so much great TV and film today it’s a wonder you get any reading and writing done?

Right?

Wrong.

For along with sloth comes the familiar sting

Of self-critique.

But rather than letting this flame punish and blind,

let it only purify and reset.

After perceived lethargic stupor,

inspiration seeps in. Invited or not.

Revision.

To see again.

We just need to pay attention.

  1. I can so relate to your poem. I’m a sixth grade teacher and that lethargy thing has been strong since school got out two weeks ago! Hoping I’m going to regroup and be renewed and ready to do some writing and life-revision really soon!

  2. It feels like some mornings, time for a task, no, wait, maybe this instead? In brief words, you’ve shown the feelings of many, hoping they come to your conclusion, too.

  3. Jonathan, I can relate to these old friends coming to visit, when I have other more productive plans.
I love these images: For along with sloth comes the familiar sting / Of self-critique. (or hate them, but well-said!)
